Mona Vale

“Karinya makes my heart sing! With Kylie as our inspiring and enthusiastic conductor and a varied and interesting repertoire, it is fun and enriching to share this with this great group.”

– Heather Fergusson

Welcome to Karinya Women’s A Cappella

Like all Hummingsong choirs, Karinya is a community choir and never forget that the first word – community – is also the most important. They make the best music they can, but always make sure they’re having fun and enjoying one another’s company more than anything else.

While many of their members have dabbled in music all their lives in some capacity, others have embraced singing for the first time in this choir. Reading music is not necessary because music can be learned by ear. The choir is open to all ages and experiences and is non-auditioned.

Karinya Women’s A Cappella are conducted by the charismatic and highly experienced Kylie Tyson. (Click here to read Kylie’s bio) They rehearse in Mona Vale on Monday evenings and have been together since the beginning of 2013. Karinya is an aboriginal word for happy home. This certainly reflects the atmosphere of this wonderful community.

Repertoire

Whatever kind of music you like, you’ll probably experience it with this new choir. Drawing from a wide range of styles, across the centuries, from Renaissance to soul and pop hits, through African spirituals to jazz to standards, there will be something for everyone. And there will be regular performances!

Rehearsals

They rehearse every Monday evening during school terms at Pittwater Uniting Church*, 10 Jubilee Ave Warriewood, from 7:30 to 9:30 including a provided tea break.  For all 2017 term dates click here.

*While the choir rehearse in a church, it is not affiliated with any and is essentially secular.

Performances

Karinya have a wide variety of performances, from small informal concerts for their families to joint concerts with other women’s choirs and international acts like The Idea of North and James Morrison. There is a performance to work towards at least once a term. You may even find yourself singing in a flashmob!

See Hummingsong Choirs having the time of their lives performing in this flashmob on the 14th December 2014 at Chatswood Chase. For 2013’s christmas flashmob at the QVB click here.

Fees – and what you get!

Because we all have busy lives, you only need to commit to one term at a time, with the set fee of $200 per term (which could range from 9 to 11 rehearsals plus any performances we organise). This fee includes your music, MP3 recordings (download and burn to CD or put on your MP3 player/iPod!) and most importantly tea and biccies in our break.

Fees are always paid in advance and are collected in the last two weeks of each term. Fees can either be paid in cash or eft. Upon registering you will receive password access to the members area where there are further details on how to pay and access Hummingsong resources.

 Testimonial

The choir has been good therapy for me. I love coming to choir and be engulfed in a community of caring ladies. No matter what your singing ability is, there is no judgment only encouragement. And when we get all the harmonies just right and the sound is soaring endorphins are released, giving you a wonderful feeling. All this wouldn’t be possible if it was not for our outstanding choir director Kylie.

Kylie teaches with such enthusiasm and dedication and is able to get the very best out of us. Her great sense of humor make the classes fun, we have lots of laughs. I am so glad to be part of this choir.
