Lane Cove

“Joining Alkira was one of the best things I’ve done.
Singing with a great bunch of women in a relaxed but stimulating atmosphere is so much fun.”

Welcome to Alkira Women’s A Cappella

Like all Hummingsong choirs, Alkira is a community choir and never forget that the first word – community – is also the most important. They make the best music they can, but always make sure they’re having fun and enjoying one another’s company more than anything else.

While many of their members have dabbled in music all their lives in some capacity, others have embraced singing for the first time in this choir. Reading music is not necessary because music can be learned by ear. The choir is open to all ages and experiences and is non-auditioned.

Alkira Women’s A Cappella is conducted by the vivacious and highly experienced Melissa Kenny. (Click here to read Melissa’s bio) They rehearse in Lane Cove on Monday evenings and have been together since the beginning of 2014. Alkira is an aboriginal word for bright and sunny. For many it has come to mean a happy place in the sun. This certainly reflects the atmosphere of this wonderful community.

Repertoire

Whatever kind of music you like, you’ll probably experience it with this choir. Drawing from a wide range of styles, across the centuries, from Renaissance to soul and pop hits, through African spirituals to jazz to standards, there will be something for everyone. And there will be regular performances!

Performances

They have a wide variety of performances, from small informal concerts for their families to joint concerts with other women’s choirs and international acts like The Idea of North and James Morrison. There is a performance to work towards at least once a term. You may even find yourself singing in a flashmob!

See Hummingsong Choirs having the time of their lives performing in this flashmob on the 14th December 2014 at Chatswood Chase. For 2013’s christmas flashmob at the QVB click here.

Rehearsals

They rehearse every Monday evening during school terms at St Paul’s Anglican Church*, 1 View Street, Chatswood, from 7:30 to 9:30 including a provided tea break. For all 2017 term dates click here.

*While the choir rehearse in a church, it is not affiliated with any and is essentially secular.

Fees – and what you get!

Because we all have busy lives, you only need to commit to one term at a time, with the set fee of $200 per term (which could range from 9 to 11 rehearsals plus any performances we organise). This fee includes your music, MP3 recordings (download and burn to CD or put on your MP3 player/iPod!), extra rehearsals throughout the term and most importantly tea and biccies in our break.

Fees are always paid in advance and are collected in the last two weeks of each term. Fees can either be paid in cash or eft. Upon registering you will receive password access to the members area where there are further details on how to pay and access Hummingsong resources.

“Almost every Monday night I kill myself to get away from work and to choir in time, wondering for the umpteenth time why I bother doing this. And every Monday night I go home on a high! The enjoyment of making music and having fun with like minded women is indeed better than any therapy I can imagine. It’s uplifting and invigorating. And despite the effort, I’m now planning my work week around being at choir on Monday nights! it’s absolutely worth it. Many thanks to the inspiring, patient and completely delightful Mel.
