Ayana Logo May 2015

I grew up singing in choirs and small groups… right through school and Uni. Singing and playing music, until I settled with children and somehow I forgot what it meant to me. I didn’t realise how much it was a part of who I am until I started again some 20 years later. I feel like I’ve found a part of myself that was sleeping… Quietly waiting. The relief is tangible… The joy is immense and my heart feels more at peace. The beauty of Hummingsong choirs for me is it’s non-competitive nature. It is supportive and nurturing and encouraging and truly community based…. I am thankful beyond measure

Welcome to Ayana Women’s A Cappella

About

Hummingsong choirs are community choirs and never forget that the first word – community – is also the most important. They make the best music they can, but always make sure they’re having fun and enjoying one another’s company more than anything else.

While many of their members have dabbled in music all their lives in some capacity, others have embraced singing for the first time in this choir. Reading music is not necessary because music can be learned by ear. The choir is open to all ages and experiences and is non-auditioned.

Rehearsals

Rehearsals are every Tuesday evening during school terms at Kamaroi School 220 Forestway, Belrose from 7:30 to 9:30 including a provided tea break.  For all 2017 term dates click here.

Inspirational leadership

Ayana Women’s A Cappella conducted by the extraordinarily talented singer and conductor Melissa Kenny. (Click here to read Mel’s bio) .

Repertoire

Whatever kind of music you like, you’ll probably experience it with this new choir. Drawing from a wide range of styles, across the centuries, from Renaissance to soul and pop hits, through African spirituals to jazz to standards, there will be something for everyone. And there will be regular performances!

Performances

Hummingsong choirs have a wide variety of performances, from small informal concerts for their families to joint concerts with other women’s choirs and international acts like The Idea of North and James Morrison. There is a performance to work towards at least once a term. You may even find yourself singing in a flashmob!

See Hummingsong Choirs having the time of their lives performing in this flashmob on the 14th December 2014 at Chatswood Chase. For 2013’s christmas flashmob at the QVB click here.

Fees – and what you get!

Because we all have busy lives, you only need to commit to one term at a time, with the set fee of $200 per term (which could range from 9 to 11 rehearsals plus any performances we organise). This fee includes your music, MP3 recordings (download and burn to CD or put on your MP3 player/iPod!) and most importantly tea and biccies in our break.

Fees are always paid in advance and are collected in the last two weeks of each term. Fees can either be paid in cash or eftpos. Upon registering you will receive password access to the members area where there are further details on how to pay and access Hummingsong resources.

Testimonial from a choir member

Choir + Mental Health

“I have a shot glass next to my bed that holds the 9 pills I take first thing every morning in order to function. Through out the day, I have to take another 4. The benefits of these medications to my mental health are varied, but no pill on earth compares to what Ayana Choir has done for me & my brain. The part of me that aches with a leaden heaviness when I’m down becomes warm and bubbly when I’m singing; surrounded by my fellow Yanies, all eyes glued to our wonderful conductor, Elisha (who’s taken us from beginner to singer in under 2 terms!). Even though practice is only once a week, I’m singing on the inside 24/7.
I take choir like medicine.”
