Fundraising for charity

Since 2012, Hummingsong, have raised over $100,000 for Delvena and Bringa women’s and children’s refuges, located on Sydney’s lower north shore and northern beaches respectively.

These refuges provide crisis accommodation, information, support, advocacy and referral for a range of issues facing families who’ve experienced domestic violence. This is an area that choir members have contributed enormously. These funds raised come from a variety of events. From as simple as a voluntary gold coin donation taken at supper break in choir rehearsal to funds raised from a single choir’s term concert to our large scale annual event involving all choirs and the community. We certainly have a team of enthusiastic and driven women amongst us!

After many discussions with refuge staff about how best to utilise the funds raised from 2014’s concert (with jazz supremo James Morrison and his ensemble); Hummingsong Choirs decided all the money would go toward creating an Arts Therapy Program that would run at both refuges.

This program is being run by a therapist who has a background in working within women’s communities where the women have suffered severe trauma.

The Creative Arts Therapy program is a wonderfully holistic program which is flexible to the specific needs of all the women involved.

Below is a quote from the Creative Art Therapist about the program:

“…Feedback from the women is that they have found the brain information useful and that some of the strategies they have been learning have helped their children become calmer. One says she now realises that her child’s behaviour is a trauma response, not his being ‘naughty’ and she is able to give him the attention he needs to heal. Another reports that she is sleeping better. They are relieved to hear that there is hope for their children and themselves and that they have the power to transform the lives of their children…

I often ask for a single key word from each participant at the end of a session. The key word response at the end of session 5 at Bringa, summing up how they feel now was: hopeful, happy, good, inspired.”
